Useful tips for beginning grant writers

I recently purchased this book to assist with my first NIH grant. It's been very helpful so far, providing many useful tips ranging from formatting suggestions to study conceptualization. They also include many common pitfalls that can be avoided.

The NIH guide is excellent in taking you through the steps to an NIH proposal. To my knowledge my institution has never received an NIH award before. However, I have two faculty members very interested in pursuing NIH proposals. The NIH Workbook has been a blessing to guide us along the proper path to a competitive NIH proposal...
Informative and instructive.

Following the step-by-step instructions provided by the authors will give you an easy to read, clear proposal. Of course this does not guarantee an award but it does optimize the presentation of your ideas. Whenever I hand an NIH grant application into our grant office they are always amazed that they don't have to correct, reformat or otherwise polish my applications unlike all the others they have. That's not down to my dubious writing style but instead due to the clear instruction provided by the GWSW NIH handbook. One note of critique, handle your copy with care, the binding does not stand up well to the rigors of a backpack/briefcase over time. But hey, that gives me the chance to purchase the newest updated version as I am doing now.

I have used this product for more than 15 years. I buy the updates frequently and give them to my colleagues and my students as gifts. Even though I am now an experienced grant writer, when I am stuck on a grant section I go back to the handbook for help. Never fails. Helpful to have these suggestions when NIH changes the formats.
